Taxonomy
Borikenomys praecursor was named by Marivaux et al. (2020). Its type specimen is LACM 162447, a tooth (right lower m3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LACM Loc. 8060, Río Guatemala, which is in an Oligocene lagoonal conglomerate in the San Sebastian Formation of Puerto Rico. It is the type species of Borikenomys.
