Diagoniella was named by Rauff (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-l S Ludl Sepkoski's reference number: 883].

It was assigned to Reticulosa by Sepkoski (2002); to Hexactinellida by Bambach et al. (2007); and to Protospongiidae by Rigby et al. (2010).
