Taxonomy
Protopsalis was named by Cope (1880).

It was synonymized subjectively with Patriofelis by Wortman (1894), Matthew (1899), Osborn (1900), Hay (1902), Matthew (1909), Matthew and Granger (1915), Gazin (1957), Guthrie (1971).

It was assigned to Hyaenodontidae by Scott (1892); to Oxyaenidae by Cope (1880), Denison (1938), Gunnell (1998); and to Oxyaeninae by Van Valen (1967), Stucky and Hardy (2007).
