Galictis was named by Bell (1826). It is extant. Its type is Viverra vittata. It is the type genus of Galictinae.

It was assigned to Mustelinae by Hay (1902); to Mustelidae by Carroll (1988); to Galictini by Baskin (2011); and to Ictonychinae by Law et al. (2018).
