Oligobunis was named by Cope (1881). It is not extant. Its type is Ictiocyon crassivultus.

It was assigned to Canidae by Wortman and Matthew (1899); to Simocyoninae by Hay (1902); to Mustelidae by Cope (1881) and Carroll (1988); to Semantoridae by Sato et al. (2009); and to Oligobuninae by Baskin (1998) and Baskin (2017).
