Taxonomy
Satherium was named by Gazin (1934) [named as a subgenus of Lutra by Gazin 1934b; raised to genus level by Barbour & Schultz (1937)]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Lutrinae by Bjork (1970), Kurten and Anderson (1980); to Mustelidae by Barbour and Schultz (1937), Carroll (1988); and to Lutrini by Willemsen (1992), Baskin (1998), Pickford (2007).
