Taxonomy
Probassariscus was named by Merriam (1911).

It was synonymized subjectively with Bassariscus by Hall (1927), Hall (1930), Gregory and Downs (1951).

It was assigned to Procyonidae by Merriam (1911), Baskin (1989), Voorhies (1990); to Procyoninae by Baskin (1998); and to Procyonini by Baskin (2004).
