Nerterogeomys was named by Gazin (1942). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Geomys by Hibbard (1967), Czaplewski (1987), Czaplewski (1990).

It was assigned to Geomyidae by Gazin (1942), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Tomida (1987), Korth (1995), Kelly (1997), McKenna and Bell (1997).
