Peridiomys was named by Matthew (1924). It is not extant. Its type is Peridiomys rusticus.

It was assigned to Heteromyinae by Wood (1935); to Mioheteromyinae by Korth (1997); and to Heteromyidae by Matthew (1924), McKenna and Bell (1997).

Korth 1997Cheek teeth lower-crowned than Mioheteromys; cusps on cheek teeth more bulbous than in other genera; metaconid of p4 at least twice as large as protostylid (subequal in size in other genera); incisors broad and il flattened anteriorly, not narrow and strongly anteriorly convex as in other genera; mandible more robust than in other genera.
