Limuloides was named by Woodward (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Hemiaspis limuloides. It is the type genus of Limuloididae.
It was assigned to Limuloididae by Størmer (1955); to Xiphosurida by Sepkoski (2002); to Planaterga by Lamsdell (2013); and to Bunodidae by Bergström (1975), Dunlop et al. (2020).
