Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
M. E. Pérez et al. 2012Chubutomys is diagnosed by the following unique combination of characters (synapomorphies marked with an asterisk): protohypsodont cheek teeth; bilobed molars; lingual wall in lower teeth straight and lacking a longitudinal furrow* (reversal to the condition present in A. punctus and more basal forms than Cavioidea s.s.); absence of mesofossetid already in young-adult ontogenetic stages (shared with ‘‘Chubutomys’’ leucoreios and with Phanomys + euhypsodont cavioids); hypoflexid extending trans- versely more than half of the crown, with cement; lateral crest curved and deflected anteroventrally from the base of the coronoid process. Chubutomys differs from Eocardia, Schistomys, Matiamys, Microcardiodon, Guiomys, and Caviidae in having rooted cheek teeth.
