Nekrolagus was named by Hibbard (1939). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pratilepus by Dawson (1958).

It was assigned to Leporinae by Kurten and Anderson (1980); and to Leporidae by Hibbard (1939), White (1991) and McKenna and Bell (1997).
