Taxonomy
Proetus sculptus was named by Barrande (1846). It is the type species of Sculptoproetus.

It was recombined as Cornuproetus (Sculptoproetus) sculptus by Alberti (1967); it was recombined as Sculptoproetus sculptus by Erben (1951) and van Viersen and Lerouge (2020).
