Desmatoclaenus was named by Gazin (1941). Its type is Desmatoclaenus hermaeus.

It was assigned to Condylarthra by Gazin (1941); to Phenacodontidae by Simpson (1945); to Loxolophinae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Arctocyonidae by Archibald (1998).
