Norisdelphis annakaensis
Taxonomy
Norisdelphis annakaensis was named by Kimura and Hasegawa (2020). Its type specimen is GMNH-PV-3463, a partial skull (with isolated left tympa- nic bulla and single tooth firmly attached to the cranium), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Usui River, which is in a Tortonian marine horizon in the Haraichi Formation of Japan. It is the type species of Norisdelphis.

Hasegawa 2020 | Norisdelphis differs from all other Delphinidae by having transversely narrow and anteroposteriorly elongated exter- nal bony nares and a wider proximal extremity of the left premaxilla; differs from all Delphinidae except Australodelphis by having an anteriorly pointed apex of the supraoccipital process in dorsal view; differs from all Delphinidae except Arimidelphis, Cephalor- hynchus, Eodelphinus, Etruridelphis, Lagenodelphis, Lagenor- hynchus, and Lissodelphis by possessing a moderately slender and elongated rostrum (width/length ratio: 0.5 in the holotype of Noris- delphis); differs from Globicephala and Protoglobicephala in the premaxilla not being much larger than the maxilla on most of the rostrum; differs from Eodelphinus by lacking a medially positioned premaxillary foramen; differs from Australodelphis by lacking verti- cal premaxillary flanges at the nares, a long, gracile, and edentulous rostrum, and a deep, skewed ventral groove of the tympanic bulla; and differs from Arimidelphis by having a wider antorbital notch, and slender teeth. |
