Taxonomy
Messelobunodon was named by Franzen (1980). It is not extant. Its type is Messelobunodon schaeferi.

It was assigned to Dichobunidae by Carroll (1988); to Dichobunini by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Dichobuninae by Theodor et al. (2007).
