Helohyidae was named by Marsh (1877).
It was reranked as the subfamily Helohyinae by Gazin (1955), Stucky (1998); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Artiodactylamorpha by Spaulding et al. (2009).
It was assigned to Pantolestoidea by Hay (1902); to Dichobunidae by Gazin (1955); to Anthracotherioidea by Coombs and Coombs (1977); to Artiodactyla by Marsh (1877), Pilgrim (1940), Carroll (1988), Stucky (1998), Ferrusquía-Villafranca (2006); to Dichobunoidea by McKenna and Bell (1997), Vislobokova (2004), Theodor et al. (2007); and to Suina by Burger and Jolley (2020).
