Taxonomy
Desmathyus was named by Matthew (1907).

It was synonymized subjectively with Hesperhys by Simpson (1945) and Wright (1998); it was reranked as Hesperhys (Desmathyus) by Gazin and Collins (1950).

It was assigned to Hesperhys by Gazin and Collins (1950); to Tayassuidae by Matthew (1907), Morea (1981) and Carroll (1988); and to Hesperhyinae by Prothero (2015) and Prothero (2021).

Prothero 2015Smaller hesperhyine with a long narrow rostrum and gracile zygomatic arches and orbital regions, and smaller less robust and in ated cheek teeth (in contrast to Hesperhys); P3 has a large lingual cingulum which may develop a protocone; i1 and i2 are dorsoventrally shallow at the base; narrow but deep plesiochoanal chamber.
