Stenomylus was named by Peterson (1907) [also said to be 1907]. It was considered paraphyletic by Cassiliano (2008).
It was assigned to Camelidae by Peterson (1906), Carroll (1988); to Stenomylinae by Simpson (1945), Whistler and Webb (2005); and to Stenomylini by Prothero (1996), Honey et al. (1998), Cassiliano (2008).
