Taxonomy

Protylopus was named by Wortman (1898). Its type is Protylopus petersoni.

It was assigned to Camelidae by Wortman (1898) and Peterson (1919); to Poebrotheriinae by Hay (1902) and Simpson (1945); and to Oromerycidae by Gazin (1955), Golz (1976), Carroll (1988) and Prothero (1998).
