Onchosaurus was named by Gervais (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo K Sant Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. Its type is Onchosaurus radicalis.
It was assigned to Mosasauridae by Gervais (1852) and Gervais (1853); to Ganopristinae by Arambourg (1940); to Pristidae by Tabaste (1963); to Galeomorphii by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sclerorhynchidae by Cappetta (1987), Suárez and Cappetta (2004), Bourdon et al. (2011) and Corral et al. (2012).
