Palaeomerycidae was named by Lydekker (1883). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Sánchez et al. (2015).
It was assigned to Cervoidea by Carroll (1988), Sach and Heizmann (2001) and Prothero and Liter (2007); to Artiodactyla by Hulbert and Whitmore (2006) and Prothero and Liter (2008); and to Giraffomorpha by Sánchez et al. (2015).
