Rhinobatos halteri was named by Biddle and Landemaine (1989). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LAS, La Soulaine, bone-bed 2, which is in a Barremian marine claystone in France.
It was recombined as Spathobatis halteri by Biddle (1993), Kriwet (1999).
