Damaliscus was named by Sclater and Thomas (1894). It is extant.
It was assigned to Bovidae by Carroll (1988); to Damaliscina by Vrba (1997); to Alcelaphinae by Grubb (2001) and Gentry (2010); and to Alcelaphini by Hassanin and Douzery (1999), Hassanin and Douzery (2003), Geraads et al. (2004) and Calamari (2021).
