Photini was named by LeConte (1881). It is extant. Its type is Photinus.

It was corrected as Photinini by Martin et al. (2019); it was reranked as the subtribe Photinina by Bouchard et al. (2011), Webster (2016), Alekseev (2019).

It was assigned to Lucidotini by Bouchard et al. (2011), Webster (2016), Alekseev (2019); and to Lampyrinae by Martin et al. (2019).
