| J. N. Biewer et al. 2020 | Species characterized by displaying the following odobenid characters: thick, broad pterygoid strut (c. 13[2]), antorbital process composed of maxilla and frontal (c. 15[1]), and angular process of mandible forming a small medial shelf (c. 49[1]). Further characterized by the following combi- nation of characters: shares with most neodobenians having a large infraorbital foramen (c. 6[1]), males with tusk-like upper canines (c. 55[1]), single-rooted p2–4 (c. 72[1], 73[1]), P3 with single, cylindrical root (c. 74[2]), single-rooted P4 and M1 (c. 76 [2], 77[2]), absence of m2 (c. 81[1]); with odobenins having a transversely and longitudinally arched palate (c. 9[2]); shares with Pontolis spp. and Dusignathus spp. having an enlarged digastric insertion (c. 46[1]). Differs from neodobenians by having a narrow, parallel-sided interorbital bar (c. 17[1]), lower canines with posterior crista (57[0]), well-developed tooth enamel (c. 62 [0], shared with basal odobenids), lower postcanine teeth with crenulated lingual cingula (c. 67[1], shared with Ar. akamatsui, I. downsi, Pelagiarctos, Po. barroni, sp. nov., and T. orangensis), and talonid basin (c. 69[1], shared with I. downsi, Pelagiarctos, Pontolis spp., and T. orangensis), P4 with posteromedially placed protocone shelf (c. 75[1]); from odobenines by having a short ascending process of the premaxilla (c. 3[1], shared with Dusignathus and Gomphotaria), presence of single-rooted m1 (c. 78[0], 79[1]). |
