Proetus simus was named by Lane (1984) [= Proetus cf. granulatus Lindström 1885 - Perry & Chatterton 1977 p. 289 pl. 1 f. 12-14, 19-20 (not pl. 1 f. 9-11, 16-18, 21-23).]. Its type specimen is MGUH 16.308, a cephalon/head, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is unite 6D, Kayser Bjerg, which is in a Wenlock reef, buildup or bioherm reef rocks/lime mudstone in Greenland.
It was recombined as Gerastos simus by Adrain (1997).
