Paleomoropus was named by Radinsky (1964). It is not extant. Its type is Paleomoropus jepseni.
It was assigned to Moropomorpha by Radinsky (1964) and Colbert and Schoch (1998); and to Lophiodontidae by Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Hooker and Dashzeveg (2004).
