Taxonomy
Macrotherium was named by Lartet (1837) [type European M. sansaniense].

It was synonymized subjectively with Chalicotherium by Cope (1891), Butler (1965), Skinner (1968).

It was assigned to Chalicotherini by Colbert (1935); to Chalicotheriidae by Lartet (1837), Carroll (1988); and to Schizotheriinae by Prothero and Schoch (1989).
