Kymbecyathus was named by Debrenne and Kruse (1986) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-l]. It is the type genus of Kymbecyathidae.
It was assigned to Ajacicyathida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Kymbecyathidae by Kerner et al. (2011), Debrenne et al. (2015).
