It was assigned to Gomphotheriinae by Simpson (1945); to Gomphotheriidae by Carroll (1988); to Elephantiformes by Shoshani and Tassy (1996), Christiansen (2007); and to Palaeomastodontidae by Andrews (1906), Abel (1919), Madden (1980), McKenna and Bell (1997), Shoshani and Tassy (2005), Sanders et al. (2010).
