Serbelodon was named by Frick (1933). Its type is Serbelodon barbourensis.
It was synonymized subjectively with Amebelodon by Tobien (1972).
It was assigned to Amebelodontina by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Gomphotheriidae by Frick (1933), Shoshani and Tassy (1996) and Lambert and Shoshani (1998); to Amebelodontinae by Shoshani and Tassy (2005); and to Amebelodontidae by Wang et al. (2017).
