Phascogalinae was named by Gill (1872). It is extant.

It was reranked as the tribe Phascogalini by Wilson and Reeder (2005).

It was assigned to Dasyuridae by Lundelius and Turnbull (1973), Krajewski et al. (1992) and Dawson et al. (1999); and to Dasyurinae by Wilson and Reeder (2005).
