Phascogale longicaudata was named by Schlegel (1866). It is extant. Its type specimen is RMNH 35135, an other (subadult male skin and skull).
It was recombined as Murexia longicaudata by Krajewski et al. (1992), Van Dyck (2002) and Woolley et al. (2020).
