Taxonomy
Phascogale melanura was named by Thomas (1899). It is extant. Its type specimen is CE 3915, an other (adult female puppet skin).

It was recombined as Murexechinus melanurus by Van Dyck (2002) and Wilson and Reeder (2005); it was recombined as Murexia melanurus by Woolley et al. (2020).

Synonyms
  • Phascogale meyeri was named by Dollman (1930). It is extant. Its type specimen is BMNH 29.5.27.57, an other (adult female skin and skull).

    It was synonymized subjectively with Murexechinus melanurus by Van Dyck (2002).
  • Antechinus wilhelmina was named by Tate (1947). It is extant. Its type specimen is AMNH 109811, an other (adult male skin and skull).

    It was synonymized subjectively with Murexechinus melanurus by Van Dyck (2002).
