Phascogale melanura was named by Thomas (1899). It is extant. Its type specimen is CE 3915, an other (adult female puppet skin).
It was recombined as Murexechinus melanurus by Van Dyck (2002) and Wilson and Reeder (2005); it was recombined as Murexia melanurus by Woolley et al. (2020).
