Diagnosis

|---|---|---|
| G. L. Georgalis et al. 2021 | “Centrochelys” burchardi can be diagnosed as a member of Testudinidae and Geochelona by the full list of shell and appendicular characters provided for these clades above. “Centrochelys” burchardi can be differentiated from the continental geochelonans by the following combination of characters: smaller size (estimated carapace length of around 80–100 cm), humerus curved and relatively slender, distal part of the femur widely forward curved (also in “Centrochelys” punica), and head of the femur longer than great trochanter (also in “Centrochelys” punica). “Centrochelys” burchardi can be further differentiated from the only other Canary Islands species, “Centrochelys” vulcanica from the Gran Canaria Island, by the following characters of its femur morphology: more robust, less robust epiphysis and proximal third of the femur, different shape in the longitudinal axis along the diaphysis, proximal part of the diaphysis having a much larger total articular surface and different orientation, less shallow and more pronounced neckline below the articular head, different shape of the outline of the epiphysis, diaphysis with almost the same width across the ventrodorsal direction, and different longitudinal curvature. |
