Planops was named by Ameghino (1887). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Megalonychidae by Ameghino (1891); to Prepotheridae by Ameghino (1894); to Megatheriidae by Carroll (1988), Gaudin (1995) and Amson et al. (2017); and to Planopinae by Varela et al. (2019).
