Taxonomy
Mylodon was named by Owen (1859) [named as a subgenus of Megalonyx by Owen 1840; raised to genus level]. It is not extant. Its type is Mylodon darwini. It is the type genus of Mylodontinae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Glossotherium by Simpson (1945), Hofstetter (1952), Kurten and Anderson (1980).

It was assigned to Edentata by Leidy (1860); to Mylomorpha by Ameghino (1885), Cope (1889); to Megatheriidae by Lydekker (1894), Hay (1902); to Mylodontidae by Owen (1859), Carroll (1988); to Mylodontinae by Hay (1930), Gaudin (1995); and to Mylodontini by Boscaini et al. (2019).
