Originally mentioned by Lamanon (1780) and Cuvier's "Recherches sur les ossemens fossiles" as Tortue des environs d'Aix

Taxonomy
Testudo lamanonii was named by Gray (1831). Its type specimen is MNHN number unknown, a shell (steikern), and it is a mold. Its type locality is Aix-en-Provence, which is in an Oligocene/Miocene terrestrial horizon in France.

It was corrected as Testudo lamanoni by Auffenberg (1974).
