Taxonomy

Patriofelis was named by Leidy (1870). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Carnivora by Leidy (1873); to Mesonychidae by Cope (1880) and Cope (1880); to Palaeonictidae by Scott (1892); to Oxyaenidae by Leidy (1870) and Gunnell (1998); and to Oxyaeninae by Wortman (1902), Hay (1902), Van Valen (1967) and Stucky and Hardy (2007).

Aelurotherium bicuspis, Aelurotherium latidens, P. ferox (syn. Limnofelis latidens), P. leidyanus, P. ulta (syn. P. compressa, P. coloradensis)

Synonyms

Aelurotherium was named by Adams (1896). Its type is Patriofelis leidyanus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Patriofelis by Matthew (1909), Matthew (1910), Denison (1938), Gazin (1957), Van Valen (1966), Van Valen (1967) and Gunnell (1998).

It was assigned to Machairodontinae by Hay (1902).
Limnofelis was named by Marsh (1872).

It was synonymized subjectively with Protopsalis by Scott (1892); it was synonymized subjectively with Patriofelis by Wortman (1894), Hay (1902), Matthew (1909), Thorpe (1923), Denison (1938), Gazin (1957), Van Valen (1966), Van Valen (1967), Gazin (1976) and Gunnell (1998).
Oreocyon was named by Marsh (1872).

It was synonymized subjectively with Patriofelis by Scott (1892), Matthew (1899), Hay (1902), Matthew (1909), Thorpe (1923), Gazin (1957), Van Valen (1966), Van Valen (1967), Gazin (1976) and Gunnell (1998).
