Taxonomy
Hyopotamus americanus was named by Leidy (1856) [original combination!]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Peanut Peak, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial horizon in the Chadron Formation of South Dakota.
It was recombined as Choeropotamus (Hyopotamus) americanus by Leidy (1857); it was recombined as Ancodus americanus by Scott (1895); it was recombined as Ancodon americanus by Hay (1902), Matthew (1909) and Cook (1912); it was recombined as Bothriodon americanus by Scott (1940); it was recombined as Aepinacodon americanus by Troxell (1921), Hay (1930), Clark (1937), Macdonald (1956), Russell (1978) and Kron and Manning (1998).
