Lutra bathygnatha was named by Lydekker (1884). It is the type species of Sivaonyx.
It was recombined as Sivaonyx bathygnatha by Willemsen (1992) and Pickford (2007); it was recombined as Sivaonyx bathygnathus by Peigne et al. (2008).
