Physothrips was named by Karny (1912). It is extant.

It was reranked as Taeniothrips (Physothrips) by Priesner (1924); it was synonymized subjectively with Mycterothrips by Mound and Hastenpflug-Vesmanis (2021).

It was assigned to Taeniothrips by Priesner (1924); to Thripidae by Mound (1968); and to Thripina by Schliephake (2005).
