Taxonomy
Arctotherium was named by Bravard (1857).

It was synonymized subjectively with Arctodus by Schultz and Howard (1935) and Kurten (1967).

It was assigned to Ursina by Ameghino (1885); to Ursidae by Ameghino (1902); to Tremarctinae by Trajano and Ferrarezzi (1995), Soibelzon et al. (2008); and to Arctotheriini by Jiangzuo and Flynn (2020).
