Taxonomy
Bassaris astutus was named by Lichtenstein (1830). It is extant. It is the type species of Bassariscus.

It was recombined as Bassariscus astutus by Hay (1902), Schultz and Howard (1935), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Baskin (2004).
