Aelurodon hyaenoides was named by Cope (1881). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Republican River, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in Nebraska.
It was recombined as Brachypsalis hyaenoides by Cope and Matthew (1915), Matthew (1918), VanderHoof and Gregory (1940), Green (1948) and Baskin (1998).
