Bunaelurus lagophagus was named by Cope (1873) [genotype; report for 1873, published 1874]. It is the type species of Bunaelurus.
It was recombined as Palaeogale lagophaga by Simpson (1946), Galbreath (1953); it was synonymized subjectively with Palaeogale sectoria by de Bonis (1981), Baskin and Tedford (1996).
