Taxonomy
Acer spitzi was named by Wolfe and Tanai (1987). Its type specimen is UWMG 31272A, a seed/fruit (Samara), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Republic, UWBM locality A0307, which is in a Ypresian lacustrine - large mudstone in the Klondike Mountain Formation of Washington.

to nutlet; 1.8 to 2.2 cm long, 0.8 to 1.0 cm wide, widest in apical 1/3; thickened basally; distal margin broadly convex, proximal margin straight for about 2/3 of length, apex broadly rounded; about 6 coalesced veins along proximal side, wing veins diverging at angles of 10° to 30 °, irregular in course, irregularly bifurcating, anastomoses common, reticulate veinlets present.
