Taxonomy
Acer watarianum was named by Takahashi and Suzuki (1988). It is not extant. Its type specimen is University Museum, University of Tokyo, No. 53002, a wood. Its type locality is Sojiji, Monzenmachi Monzen, which is in a Miocene terrestrial horizon in the Yanagida Formation of Japan.
