Taxonomy

Cynomys niobrarius was named by Hay (1921).

Synonyms

Cynomys churcherii was named by Burns and McGillivray (1989).

It was synonymized subjectively with Cynomys niobrarius by Goodwin (1995), Burns (1996), Mead et al. (1996).
Cynomys spispiza was named by Green (1960). Its type specimen is SDSM No. 57100, a mandible (fragment of left lower jaw bearing P4-M3), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Cynomys leucurus by Black (1963); it was synonymized subjectively with Cynomys niobrarius by Goodwin (1995).
